A New Opportunity for Tree Cities of the World

Tree Cities can join FAO’s Green Cities Network for global visibility, technical support, funding opportunities, and collaboration with other cities on greener, healthier urban environments.

A diverse group of individuals stands in front of a green cities initiative banner, promoting environmental sustainability.

As a recognized Tree City of the World, your community already demonstrates exemplary leadership in urban forestry.

This month, we’re pleased to share an exciting opportunity for Tree Cities of the World communities to join the Green Cities Network of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) – a global network to advance greener, healthier, more inclusive, and more resilient urban environments.

Membership offers your city:

  • Increased international visibility as a recognized sustainability leader
  • Tailored technical assistance from FAO and its partners
  • Access to green and climate financing and investment opportunities
  • Space for cities to learn from one another and share practical tools for planning, implementing, and monitoring greener urban environments

The Green Cities Network helps cities transform urban spaces using integrated approaches that deliver economic, social and environmental benefits – all at once. It sits at the heart of FAO’s Green Cities Initiative (GCI). It launched in 2020 with the goal of generating tangible improvements in people's health and well-being and the environments around them, reaching 1,000 cities by 2030.

Being recognized as a Tree City of the World already demonstrates exemplary leadership in urban forestry stewardship. The Green Cities Network can help build on that foundation by integrating urban forestry, urban agriculture – including farmers markets and food loss and waste reduction – organic waste management, and sustainable bioeconomy into city planning, investment, and management.

Ready to join? Complete the short application form and you will receive an introductory information package outlining how to engage with the network.

We look forward to welcoming your city to the Green Cities Network!
