FAQs

The Tree Cities of the World programme builds a global network of cities practicing urban forestry excellence around the world. Once recognised, cities receive access to an online portal where they receive branded Tree Cities of the World marketing materials, resources, and additional opportunities to engage in tree planting work with the Arbor Day Foundation. In the coming years and as the network grows larger, Tree Cities of the World will be able to share ideas and promote best practices in urban forestry with more and more global citizens.

You can view a current list and map of recognised cities here.

You can start an application by visiting recognition.arborday.org. Applications are due by January 31st of each year.

There is no cost to apply or be recognised as a Tree City.

The application is annual and recognises the city for the work they did to manage the urban forest throughout the calendar year in which they are applying.

In order to earn recognition, cities must meet five core standards.

  1. Establish Responsibility for community trees
  2. Set the Rules for community trees
  3. Know What You Have as a community forest resource
  4. Allocate the Resources to plant and care for community trees
  5. Celebrate Achievements

Yes, absolutely! Once cities are recognised, they receive access to a Tree Cities of the World Member Portal where they can download logos, sign and flag designs, press releases, and other branded materials.
