How one Mexican city is turning recognition into policy and community pride.

Set on the high desert plateau of north-central Mexico, San Luis Potosí is a fast-growing city where hot, dry seasons make shade and livability a priority.
This year, the city earned its third consecutive Tree Cities of the World recognition. Mayor Galindo and Christian Iván Azuara, Director of Municipal Services see this honor as a mandate to keep raising the bar.
The city council recently passed updated urban-forest ordinances that clarify responsibilities, protect heritage trees, and align daily work with the program’s five standards.
In addition to these ordinances, the city has a unique program that connects residents to their local trees. The Bosque de la Vida, or Forest of Life, plants one tree for every child born, more than 3,300 trees to date, building lifelong stewardship and visible canopy gains.
San Luis Potosí hosted Mexico’s national Tree Cities of the World gathering in late July 2025. The conference celebrated the 27 cities recognized across Mexico and was convened by Reforestamos México with support from FAO and the Arbor Day Foundation.
